A verse in the Quran translates to: "If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. "[Surat Tawbah 9:40].
There is beauty in this unknown assistance from Allah. To know that one's sadness is buffered so beautifully by the mercy of Allah gives an inner feeling of peace. We are content with the struggle, not content in that we've accepted our doom, but content in that we understand it is a test from Allah that will ultimately bring us closer to Him. There is mercy in knowing that Allah does not burden a soul with more than it can bear. This is described eloquently in surat Baqarah in a verse that translates:
"Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people" [2:286].
We pray that we meet Allah's mercy at every stage of our lives. We pray for the strength to overcome any and all sadness we face at all degrees. We pray that He make it a means of getting closer to Him and not a means of straying from Him.
And,
"Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."
